Loving in the USA

Tuesday 12th – Saturday 16th November 2019

Being a tourist in the Big Apple is hard work, as is being a Mum, but somehow as I slept off an epic weekend, Katie was up and at it getting the kids off to school. With Jules off early on a work trip, I felt like a bad lazy friend for not helping! When I eventually emerged it was to lay on the couch and watch Fleabag while Katie went on one of her massive 18km runs. No idea how she does it. Especially since the weather in Maryland was bordering on snow, quite literally.

To not be a complete waste of space for a day, I joined Katie on an excursion to the local crafts place and Target for groceries (Target is soooo much more in the US). Every day I’ve marveled at their gorgeous neighbourhood, this time I actually remembered to take some footage to prove my point!!

Once back at Katie’s for coffee (the best since leaving AUS), it was time to commence my new hobby of cross stitching! The hobby choice had nothing to do with the extra gray’s I’ve been finding in my hair, not ready to be a grandma yet but like colouring in has been the new zen, as is cross stitch. Having watched Katie work away at a gorgeous unicorn and rainbow cross stitch for the last few weeks, I was keen to join in on the fun. The only thing that could pause our determination, SNOW!!!! Yep, white flakes of pretty were falling from the sky for the first time in Maryland, while the Costa’s were there at least.

So it’s a rule in Maryland that if snow is forecast for the day, kids don’t have to go to school. Unfortunately this snow made a surprise appearance so the kids were to experience their first snow while at school. Unfortunately the snow didn’t stick and was well and truly over before the school bell. While I did more of nothing, Katie picked up Drew and to keep him entertained, it was cooking time. I’ve mentioned it before and I’ll mention it a million times more, this kid is hilarious. A funny little personality that can be oh so serious for when it’s time to cracks eggs into the bowl, little dude can cook too, definitely showed up this old lady!!

After getting my arse kicked AGAIN at monopoly, it was an early dinner and bed for this grandma!

More ready and kicking than my previous days effort, we were off on a day trip to Alexandria, not Alexandretta like in Indiana Jones and as I kept thinking in my head. Heading in the general direction of Washington D.C., the closer to the capital, the more epic the highways and bridges, and weird planes in the sky. I wasn’t quick enough to get a pic, just have a solid memory of a helicopter/plane/hovercraft/stealth jet in my head, didn’t the Avengers relocate their headquarters to DC????

Anyhoo, loved getting a glimpse of the monument, the capital building and picture perfect city of Washington D.C., having been there once before, it’s pretty high up on the list of cities I love. But once we hit the town of Alexandria, it was proving to be as equally picture perfect, tree lined streets of beautiful old 3 story houses all dressed in their autumn best, with each house it’s own character. Think more like London townhouses or brownstones in Brooklyn, would have loved to knock on a few doors and look inside but apparently that’s not done here.

After Google took us on a scenic tour trying to find the car park, we finally hit the streets of Alexandria, the cold nearly floored us both! Was definitely in the minus but when the sun is shining and the sky is blue, you almost believe the cold is a figment if your imagination, surely it can’t be this gorgeous and this farkin cold???

After wandering around the harbour and streets until our toes were icicles, we settled in for a Thai lunch with a view. God I love Thai food and did not expect it to be this good in a little town in the US! Fed to the brink we braved the cold again and went in search of the littlest house in the US, or was it the skinniest, either way, given Katie’s arm span was nearly as wide as the house, dare I say it was both!!

Have to say, Alexandria is as cute as a button, if a town can be. All these terraced houses, coloured doors with their autum wreaths, red and orange trees and hot as hell muscle cars. Reminded me of Georgetown in D.C. and I wanted to live there too!!

With gorgeous shops to explore and also to get a reprieve from the cold that was definitely no longer my imagination, we explored the shop Anthropologie which gets a mention cos the clothes are gorgeous, the home wares unique and I could have spent a plane ticket home in there but tried to show some constraint, there is such a thing as excess baggage! All walked out, shopped out and freezing, we did what any normal person would do, had icecream!! Now this isn’t just your run of the mill scoop of gelato or soft serve, this was Nicecream. Take fresh cream, chocolate and of course sugar, pour it into a churner (not sure what the hell its called), mix the yummy up then pour over liquid nitrogen, looks a little something like this:

And tastes like the yummiest of yums you’ll ever taste. Best icecream I’ve ever had and you know that’s a big call, love me an icecream more than I love me a castle, ok, maybe not. With time NOT on our side on account of focusing on icecream rather than the time, it was scoff, leg it to the car and head for Drew’s pick up. This time I was ready to snap pics of D.C. Look there it is:

Ok, shit pic I’ll agree with that. The spin home was once again a beauty, and this time I saw the deer Katie had been telling me about. Ok it was dead on the side of the road but proof they exist!! Didn’t get the deer in this pic but here’s the general look of cruising the highway in Maryland…

Once home I finally remembered to capture the daily school bus drop off, still feels like I was watching a typical American movie about the perfect suburban neighbourhood…

Aware that I was quickly running out of time in Maryland, I savored the games of monopoly and goodnight hugs. It was the next day that I like to call “get shit done day”. Having decided to head back to AUS at the end of Jan, I was no longer on the prowl for a job or place to live in London, rather it was head down to work out how to fill the short time I had left OS with my bucket list of adventures. Right near the top, Jordan, or more specifically, Petra. Never heard of it?? If you’ve seen Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, that epic place in the crescent moon canyon with the buildings carved into rocks, yeah, that’s Petra. If that doesn’t work for you, google it. Using the day to plan my next adventures and also get off my lazy arse and join Katie for a run, ok, lag behind but try my best, it was Katie’s home made schnitzels that made pounding the pavement worth it. I’ll add her cooking to all the things I’ll miss about being in Maryland. And the thing I’ll miss the second most (after Katie!), are these three. They are all such different personalities but all so smart, loving and a lot of fun to be around. And another hobby I might take up once home, building train sets!!

Friday was another day to get our arses into gear and enjoy the Maryland sunshine. What was supposed to be a leisurely stroll with the neighbour Casey ended up being a 10km walk around the burbs and main stretch. No complaining here, exercise yay! Chatting with friends yay! Sunshine yay!! Laughing your arse off cos Casey is hilarious, yay!! With Jules having been away since Tuesday, it was at the Friday night pub dinner with all the expats community that he returned home to a family that really missed him, many many hugs. Defs made the right choice to go back to AUS, I want little kiddlywinks to have my own little family, that hopefully love me enough to miss me. Was also awesome spending my last night colouring with the kids, chatting to Katie’s new friends and seeing the local town of, crap, can’t remember the name, where all the fancy people live apparently. Unfortunately being the last night meant I had to get packing, 2 weeks of an ever expanding pile of my mess in the basement was not gonna be easy to get back into one case.

With cuddles, goodbyes and hopes to see them all soon, it was at the airport giving little Drew bear a cuddle in the back seat the tears in the eyes welled up then hugging Katie goodbye was what nearly broke me. Being part of her family for the past few weeks really was one of my greatest experiences. And yes, the tears toppled for a few minutes when checking in but I guess it was off on my next adventure, in more ways than one now that the decision was made to return home. You realise that in life you can see amazing things, be in beautiful places but what you remember most is how experiences made you feel, and my two weeks with the Costa’s was what real love and friendship is all about. Tears welling again…and an unusual amount of snot, have a feeling that Moroccan flu was just in hibernation….

Shoop, shoop, shoop

Having gotten a taste for all things snow, today was the day Kyles was knocking another thing off her bucket list and learning to ski.

After smashing the freebie brekkie again, we headed up the mountain/hill/hump to the Saariselka Ski & Snow Resort.

One thing about Finland, everyone that works here, albeit not Finnish, are absolutely lovely, and happy. Pretty sure I would be too if i lived and worked in a magic snow globe.

We once again kitted up, hiring boots, skis and helmets ready for our noon lesson. The awesome Heather from Birmingham, while helping us sort what was what, let it slip that last night, while we were snoring our heads off, Saariselka had one of the most impressive northern lights displays – no hunting required. They could be seen as clear as day from very ski hill where we stood, 5 minutes from our Inn. Far out brussel sprout is the PG reaction.

With half hour to burn before our lesson, we heel and toed it to the cafe next door, I forgot how damn awkward it was to walk in ski boots, and that after 5 minutes your feet feel completely numb!

Both full of nerves at the impending doom, for once, we decided that gin was not the answer, just coffee – caffeine and warmth.

Luckily for us, since we didn’t book in advance we got our own personal ski instructor, Danny from New Zealand. Another awesome human being who for 90 minutes helped us shoop shoop shoop down the slopes.

Having skied three times before, although not in over 10 years, I still needed a lesson too. Turning out the left ski to turn right still doesn’t make sense in the blonde head of mine.

For a complete newbie to skiing, Kyles absolutely killed it. In a good way. For the whole 90 minute lesson, only fell over once! But there was the fencing incident…

Overall, absolute superstar! Never seen a first time skier stay upright while top speed down a slope and come off the winner with the rope lift. She was legen… wait for it… dary! Legendary!

I managed to make it through some wobbles and to the end of the lesson without any going arse up… the reward, a nice cold beer and sweet potato fries in the half time break.

After not seeing each other for 6 months, I love that we can still spend an hour and a half sitting in a cafe laughing til our stomachs hurt and talking crap about everything and anything… while still somehow pondering our existential existence. We go between crying tears of laughter at lame jokes like these:

https://www.buzzfeed.com/mikespohr/new-dad-jokes

To talking about the meaning of life – to live every moment, do things that scare the crap out of you and to never for a moment forget that we are blessed to live the life we lead. Sounds like a fridge magnet.

Round two and it was time to tackle the slope without Danny as our guiding light. Once again, superstars. 2022 Winter Olympics here we come! Maybe not but kinda proud I made it down the main slope without stacking it, although at snails pace…

As the slopes cleared we thought it was time for a break and headed back to the cafe for more courage. I mean beer. After resting our battered bodies, we decided to retire gold medal winners. Too bad the last bus to town had already left. No wonder the slopes were quiet!

After hiking back to town and indulging in more delicious Rudolph burgers and loki, we finally got around to a pub crawl around Saariselka. And then for some reason thought it was a grand idea to hunt for auroras again. Made sense at the time! We hiked up the tobogan hill but alas, the clouds hid the lights and Eileen was no where to be seen.

More vids and pics to come!!

WTF

Jumping off the train station you’d be forgiven for thinking we’d just disembarked from the Polar Express… snow, snow and more snow, still no Jon Snow though…

Arriving in Rovaniemi just after 7am, we were like kids on Christmas Day, having literally arrived in the official home of Santa Claus. We stashed our bags at the train station and headed for the jolly old man’s home. Having been lucky enough to visit the snow before, this was still something else. Trees covered in snow, cars covered in snow, everything had a thick layer of snow… and then amongst the fascination it hit… snow is farken cold, -11 cold, WTF!!

Rocking up at the Santa Claus Village well before anything was open, which was fair enough given the dude just had a really heavy workload, we killed time with a Finnish breakfast buffet, copious amounts of coffee and a view like something from a fairytale… through the blur of a crappy iPhone.

We hit up the old man straight away to get ahead of the pesky kids who hog Santa’s time – Kyles was sweet and just wanted to ask Santa to see her niece Paige next Christmas, I took a more pageant queen angle and wanted world peace. Neither of us will get what we wanted, dude didn’t even ask. Isn’t that part of your job description? Anyhoo, pics to come later, new age Santa gives you pictures on a USB and that’s one adapter I didn’t bring, damn would have been more useful than the curling iron I packed… here’s the creepy LEGO version instead…

Out and about in Santa’s Village, it really is magical. Fairy lights, snow, reindeer (yum!) and snowmen (sorry – snowperson)… and my fave, an ice bar! We were super touristy, paid to do all the overpriced things and didn’t care one bit… it was worth it!!

Check this out and try tell me you don’t believe in Santa!!

So the husky sledding was freakin awesome but heartbreaking in the beginning. Stay with me… walking up to Bear Hill sledding and seeing all of these glorious dogs tied up and yelping, broke my heart and then realised I was one of those arsehole people that hurt animals for my own entertainment. Didn’t sit well. Thank goodness Kylie is her awesome self and talks to everyone so we found out that these dogs love to run, the yelping is from having to stop and wait… the huskies (Alaskan, not the pretty hyped up Siberian ones) are born and bred to run over 1,000 clicks a day at up to 30km/h so pulling our heavy arses around is just part and parcel of what they love… hmm, did I fall for the tourist pitch, yeah, kinda…

Awww, you’re a good boy…

Anyways, after our sledding adventure with the incredible Tom Hardy (oh yeah…), it was the ice bar and all the vodka…

Hey Kylie, lick it…

… and of course, where there’s snow, there’s ice ice baby, ice planks and hammer time (that’s for you Pattie!)…

In case you’re wondering how to dress for -11, or -17 by the time we left, all that is required is: 3 x pairs of socks (the third an overpriced pair of wool ones from the souvenir shop that saved at least three toes), knee high winter boots, thermal leggings, jeans, snow pants, thermal top, jumper, ski jacket (hood up), snow gloves, neck/face protector, scarf and beanie… yes I’m full of Christmas pudding but looking like the Michelin man is just part of snow adventures… which is what I’ll keep telling myself…

Special thanks to Paula for lending me everything, would be coming back minus a few fingers and vital organs otherwise…this is how big our smiles are when we find an open fire to warm our cold arses on…

The scenery in Santa Claus village is other worldly – in that a good little Aussie lass without a sense of adventure would never in her life see such beauty in the snow covered trees, purple and orange skies, icicles and glittering snow, just wish my pictures could show just how mind blowing amazing it really is…

Oh yeah, and amongst it all, I found the wall… knew it was out here somewhere…

Our last adventure at the Santa Claus village was a 3km reindeer sleigh ride. When booking it in the morning for a 4pm departure, it seemed like good timing – obvs forgot that at 4pm it’s dark and around -17 degrees… the look on Rudolf’s face says it all: “Paybacks a bitch, this is for eating my brother…”

So for all our adventures at Santa Claus’ Village, the biggest adventure was our night time hunt for auroras courtesy of the bar man at the ice bar who Kylie made friends with… a dude we don’t know, picking us up in the middle of the night and taking us to the middle of nowhere…yeah, all kind of psychotic serial killer movie twists running through my head but must have made it back alive… unless its a ghost writing this, or the bar man… nah, he wasn’t this funny… (ok, we all know only my mum thinks I’m funny).

So we made it back alive but I’ll save the hunting auroras update for when we have all the glorious pics from the bar man… auroras on my dumb arse iPhone looks like this:

Hel on earth

So when Hel only has 3 hours of sunlight per day and is obsessed with fairy lights (see previous post), wondering through the streets for a day is like living in a magical winter wonderland. Although today the snow is more of a sludge and it’s rain instead of a blizzard… gotta think positive and get into the spirit, and three layers of thermals… this is what dressing for a day out in Hel looks like… in suitable clothing…

Being our super duper trip planner, Kyles had today’s roster of sites lined up while I was still soaking up the zzz’s… after a quick excursion to the local for cheap brekkie pastries (keto is way too pricey in Finland, will roll home) and to gawk in awe at the pickle selection (also LOVE pickles)… it was out and into it…

Cue ice rinks, markets, Presidential Palaces, Cathedrals, an icey harbour, saunas, the Helsinki Sky Wheel, and of course, fairy lights… and me with my SLR camera being a photographer wannabe…

And there was Glogi… warm fruity tea with nuts and raisins… which did kinda made us a bit nuts with renditions of made up songs about Glogi… but anyways… stumbling across the Old Market Hall with all the Finnish foods was amazeballs, not usually one for food spam but kinda couldn’t help myself, one of everything please… start rolling…

And then we discovered that reindeer aren’t just for pulling a jolly fat dudes sleigh, they are delicious too! Reindeer kebab for dinner…

So 18,000 steps later… some possibly in the very early hours, it was onto our sleeper train, heading to Rovaniemi and the home of Santa Claus, shit, wish I didn’t just eat his reindeer…

Tuesday 1st January 2019.

Straight to Hel

New Year’s in Hel? Why the Hel not.

Nothing like a 4.30am wake up call to get the party started but if you were never asleep, is it really a wake up or a get the Hel up call?

So we legged it to Gatwick in the early hours, with enough time to shove our faces with the only thing that cures the morning grumps, bacon…

So now we’re on a 3 hour flight to Helsinki – hence the Hel references if you’re still a little behind – just licked spilt Gin off my iPhone screen so I think that’s a prelude of the night to come… stay tuned…

Quite literally, landing in Helsinki and still in a bit of a jet lag haze, looking out the window on decent and wondering if the white walker army is close, I swear we just flew over The Wall.. wake up!!!

The first introduction to Finnish people… the dude at Immigration, right out of my Fireman calendar and spoke my language.. “How are you mate?”, his response, “Eh…”, right back at ya.

Getting a little (a lot) lost legging it from the airport to the train to the tram and finally to the Airbnb, host looks like a damn model, where the hell are well? Not my kind of hell…

But yeah nah (they don’t get “yeah nah” in Europe), we got our New Years kits on, apparently us Aussie girls think wearing fancy dresses and heeled boots out in snow and ice for New Years is a fab idea… not so smart, but pretty… through beer goggles maybe…

So I love my white walker contacts and wear them at every loser chance I get. Out in Helsinki, people aren’t fazed, it’s normal to look like an apocalyptic zombie, I like this place…

Without any definite plans, winging it as only us Aussies say, headed to the Nepalese restaurant downstairs for sustenance to meet our gin intake then onto a secret bar that’s so secret it’s a secret you’re standing up outside for a damn hour before they let you in… anyhooo… the gin was good, the secret passage way in was kinda cool and the price of the gin, well, it was gold plated gin after all… (no pics cos it’s a rule that they are just too cool for pics)…

Heading outside to catch New Years in all its glory, we quite literally stumbled into a blizzard…

…its was freakin amazing, I’m mesmerized by snow and probs only known by my nearest and dearest, I LOVE fairy lights… Helsinki is the capital of fairy lights. Snow + fairy lights = happy holly. Proof is in the picture fail that turned into a video, was actually smiling with teeth, I never show teeth unless I’m 200, no wait, 500% happy… can’t recall last time that happened. Check my pics on FB, when was the last time I showed teeth?? (Please don’t check, that’d be kinda weird…)

So anyway, the point of the long winded tail is that when the clock struck 12 and 2019 kicked off, I was in a bar, drinking gin with my bestie, looking out through a massive window at snow, fairy light and fireworks… and I’ll never be able to wipe that smile off my face!! And would never want to.

BTW, the bar forgot the tail bit of the menu but the window and snow and gin… that was really the point of this pic… liar…
